Policemen in Awe town, Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State on Wednesday night, averted what could have resulted in a bloody clash and the destruction of property worth millions of naira in the town.

Aggrieved youths in the town were protesting the death of their colleague, a 25-year-old Abayomi Shittu, inside the swimming pool of a newly established five-star hotel in the community.
It was gathered that the incident occurred around 6.00pm that day when the deceased, who was said to be drunk, went to swim in the adults’ pool in the hotel.
An eyewitness disclosed that when Shittu’s colleagues, who were also in the hotel observed that he was motionless in the swimming pool, they immediately alerted officials of the hotel.
“An official of the hotel brought a machine to help in recuing him but the machine would not work. Efforts to look for an alternative machine failed.
The water in the pool was eventually evacuated around 10.00pm when the lifeless body of Abayomi was found in the pool,” the witness said.
The Divisional Police Officer for the area, who was said to have been alerted by the hotel’s officials, arrived the hotel late in the night with armed policemen.
It was gathered that the timely arrival of the DPO and a youth leader in the community, Mr. Gbade Adesesan, doused the tensed situation from degenerating into a bloody violence as youths in the community mobilised for a massive destruction of the hotel.
Some of the aggrieved youths while speaking with journalists, said being a new hotel, the swimming pool lacked among other things divers, life jackets and inner tubes that can be used in rescuing victims whenever there is emergency.
It was learnt that the body of the deceased was yesterday released to his family and that he has since been buried according to Islamic injunction.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Olabisi Ilebanafor, confirmed the incident, stating that the state police command has commenced investigation into the matter.
