Ekpo made this statement on January 10, 2014, Friday, while commenting on the failure of Mikel Obi to clinch the 2013 Glo/CAF Footballer of the Year Award.
Manchester City’s Yaya Toure grabbed the award at the ceremony held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos on January 9, 2014, Thursday.
“Mikel is a very a talented player, but I think he should try and work more on his scoring ability.“The only difference between Mikel and Yaya is their scoring abilities.“We know other midfielders that are scoring regularly for their clubs and countries; Mikel should not be an exception.“I think that was the reason he lost the award to Yaya, and it was a very sad one for Nigeria,” the ex- Eagles’ midfielder said.
Ekpo hailed Coach Stephen Keshi and the Super Eagles for winning the 2013 Glo/CAF awards.
It would be recalled that ex-international, Kanu Nwankwo, was the last Nigeria player to win the prestigious CAF Africa Football of the Year Award in 1999. Another previous Nigerian winners are Rashidi Yekini (1993) and Emmanuel Amunike (1994).
