The Headies 2013 Nominees’ List is out and it’s as fierce as ever! Many music heads are calling it the most competitive and hottest nominees list since the inception of the Headies. Looking at the list, there’s enough reason to say so.
In the Artiste of the Year category, it’s a straight up heat with Iyanya, Davido, Wizkid, Flavour, Olamide and Ice Prince fighting for top honours. It’s a similar situation in the Album of the Year category and Song of the Year category. There are five nominees in the Album of the Year category; ‘Iyanya Vs. Desire’ by Iyanya, ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ by Davido,R&BW by Banky W, Blessed by Flavour and YBNL by Olamide.
Pop artistes mainly dominate Nigeria’s music market but within the last year the rap music has risen tremendously. This has reflected in the nominees’ list with rapper Olamide bagging the highest number of nominations. Olamide who has released three albums in three years has a total of nine nominations. Another rapper follows him. Phyno whose Igbo rap singles are some of the biggest rap songs within the year in review bagged a total of seven nominations. This is the first time in the awards illustrious history that rappers will dominate the nominees’ list.
Pop acts Davido and Iyanya both have five nominations each. Iyanya was nominated in the Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B/Pop Album and Best Pop Single categories. Davido’s nominations were in the Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Best R&B/Pop Album, Best Pop Single and Hip Hop World Revelation categories. EME artiste, Banky W was nominated four times in the nominees’ list.
Waje leads the female pack with a total of four nominations in the Best Recording of the Year, Best Reggae/Dancehall Single, Best Vocal Performance (female) and Hip Hop World Revelation categories.
In this year’s edition of the Headies, a new category has been introduced and an old category brought back. The ‘Best Alternative Song’ category is a new category and it was created for artistes whose songs reflect any form or style of music, which falls outside the mainstream of recent or past popular musical trends. After being scrapped after the 2010 Headies, the Best Reggae/Dancehall single returns with Waje, Orezi, General Pype and Baba Dee as nominees.
This year also sees Highlife legend Dr. Victor Olaiya take the honour as the oldest nominee in the history of the Headies. The 83-year-old veteran was nominated in the Best Collabo category alongside 2Face Idibia for the song ‘Baby Jowo’ (Remix).
In the Producers of the Year category it’s a relatively newbie affair with Pheelz, Del B, Leriq, Legendury Beatz and D’Tunes picking up nominations.
This year there are a total of 68 nominees. To check out the full nominees list go to www.theheadies.com
